Luigi’s Mansion 4: All Rumours & Expert Speculations

Charge up your Poltergust 3000, stick on your green cap, and practice being brave in the mirror, because we’re taking a look at everything we know about the arrival of Luigi’s Mansion 4. Mario’s scaredy-cat brother took the world by storm with his Nintendo Switch adventure, and we are very much looking forward to heading back into his world for more ghost-hunting, gold-discovering gameplay.

As Kermit once said, ‘It’s not that easy being green,’ something that Luigi has certainly known over the years. Heck, Mario gets to stomp on Goombas and Luigi gets lost in haunted mansions. But with the arrival of the Nintendo Switch 2 imminent and Luigi being such a big hitter for Nintendo fans, the fourth game in the series could be his magnum opus, the best of the bunch, and the one where he finally gets to hang up his hat at the end of it.

As you know, it’s my job to collect rumours and snippets of truth from the internet to put together alongside cold hard facts to give you a professional opinion on what is coming next, all from a guy who loves Nintendo and Luigi probably more than some members of his own family (if they’re reading this, they know which ones). Remember, if there’s something strange in your neighbourhood, you need to call Luigi instead of Bill Murray and the lads, alright?

Rumours
  • Launching on Switch 2
  • Mario could be making a big appearance
  • Luigi is leaving the mansion and exterminating ghosts in an apartment complex in the next game
Speculation
  • Could potentially be the last Luigi’s Mansion game
  • Professor E.Gadd and Polterpup will return

What Can We Expect From Luigi’s Mansion 4 Gameplay?

For those of you who have played Luigi’s Mansion 3, you’ll know that all of his pals from the Mushroom Kingdom were part of the storyline this time. It brought a new character in the form of Gooigi and allowed us to take a look at what co-op gameplay feels like in Luigi’s world.

So what’s next? Is this going to be a solo trip for Luigi this time, or will Gooigi appear once more? The sidekick thing worked well, but I have a better theory about what might be happening in this next game. I think after the success of the Super Mario Bros. Movie and the fact that a lot more people have got used to seeing Mario and Luigi together, then Nintendo might do away with Gooigi and add Mario into the equation. Luigi being Mario’s boss, so to speak, would be a nice touch; Mario might be the expert when it comes to plumbing, but Luigi has much more experience in tracking down ghosts, so that responsibility dynamic shift between the brothers would be good to see.

In my professional opinion, this will also be the last Luigi’s Mansion game in the series. Yes, I know that is hard to hear, but I think Nintendo will probably end the series on the new Switch and look to give Luigi some other options outside of ghost hunting and vacuuming. I also think they might concentrate on the Metroid series and bringing out some new Mario titles for a while now anyway, especially with the arrival of the Switch’s successor.

We’ve only had two Luigi’s Mansion titles originally released for home consoles in the series, Luigi’s Mansion 1 & 3 (2 was on the 3DS and later made HD for the Switch). Luigi’s Mansion 3 sold 14.5 million copies, over 11 million copies more than the GameCube game, but I think that Nintendo knows they can’t do much more with the formula than what they already have and that they’ll go out on a high with the next and last game (and I’ll talk about that in the next section).

In terms of what the gameplay might be like, I honestly don’t think there will be much of a change. We’ll see new Poltergust upgrades for sure, but the Luigi’s Mansion formula works well as it is for the core Luigi fans – there won’t be any plans to mix things up like they did with Super Mario Odyssey or Breath of the Wild. I don’t think we’ll be seeing Luigi heading through a vast open-world version of the Mushroom Kingdom or suddenly switching to a first-person-view like Doomguy with a vacuum cleaner, nor do I think we’ll see a change to a graphics style like Mario & Luigi: Brothership. Still, there is one setting-based rumour that you might like – Luigi could finally be leaving the mansion for a new building.

The Main Luigi’s Mansion 4 Rumours

The biggest rumour doing the rounds on the internet is that the next Luigi’s Mansion game might not actually be set in a mansion at all. The working title floating around the internet is ‘Apartment of Apparitions’, which sounds like Luigi will be leaving the mansion in favour of a block of apartments. That could fit in with the more real-world setting of New Donk City in Super Mario Odyssey or the apartment block where Mario and Luigi live in the Super Mario Bros. Movie.

There are some other weird rumours out there on the internet too, many of which have Mario in and lots that have him as the main character. I think if you want Mario as the main character in a Luigi’s Mansion game, then the best bet is to check out the Mario’s Mansion ROM hack because Luigi is definitely here to stay as the top dog of the series.

I would strongly agree that rumours of Professor E.Gadd and our cute friend the Polterpup returning are true, and that’s where the rumour trail goes cold. The weird interview I saw with the late Satoru Iowata swearing at an interviewer over talk of a fourth game definitely doesn’t have any mileage to it, for example. which is why you shouldn’t always believe everything you read on the internet and come to trusted nerds like me who take things with a pinch of salt and use their industry experience to debunk things!

Can We Expect New Levels?

So, the main rumour surrounding the new game is that Luigi is primed to step out of his usual haunt (pun intended) and into an apartment complex to carry on his ghostbusting duties. That means the levels are going to look a lot different than the traditional rundown, oldy-worldy settings we’ve been used to thus far. Obviously we’re going to need the usual hidey holes, vases, and secret compartments for coins, cash, and hidden treasure, but I think we’ll be dealing with a more modern environment. I think we can expect to see Nintendo having modern tech too, like a ghost riding on a Roomba and maybe bosses texting grumpily in the corner of a room while working an air fryer and using a vape.. isn’t modern life great?

As for the level layouts, I think we’ll enter and move around rooms in the same way and still need to climb in through vents or shimmy up ladders to get in through other windows. Fire escapes will probably play a big part of getting from floor to floor, and I imagine that Ninty will mirror the ‘theme’ setting of the different floors of the previous mansion from the third game. Perhaps they’ll have different decades for each floor in order to give us a kind of ‘haunting through the ages’ feel to the game.

My Thoughts On A Possible Release Date For Luigi’s Mansion 4

In my professional opinion, I think that Luigi’s Mansion 4 is most likely to be released as a launch title for the Nintendo Switch 2 with a price tag of around $49.99/£45.00. I think that they will both be released in Fall 2025.

To me, it makes sense from a historical point of view. Luigi’s Mansion was the game that I was most excited about getting with the GameCube back in 2000, and it would be a nice move to release it alongside the new console to pay homage to the GameCube and a great way to end the Luigi’s Mansion series too. Luigi has selling power, even more so since the Super Mario Bros. Movie, and I can’t wait to get my hands on this game when it does launch so that I can put the Poltergust through its paces once more!
