Just take a look at this beauty. We all know that Sean Fletcher is the master of creating Delta Skins; heck, he created our very own Analogue Pocket-inspired Retro Dodo Delta Skin for playing Game Boy Color & GBA games. He’s worked on making a better interface for DS Games on the app and also raised money for charity with his Pride Collection. Now, he’s turned his hand to revamping how we play the Nintendo 64 on the app, and as an avid N64 fan, I can honestly say he’s nailed it.
I had a skin before that was pretty bog-standard – it had a D-pad and Analog Stick as well as the C buttons, but it was a little janky and didn’t really cut the mustard when playing games like The Legend of Banjo Kazooie: Jiggies of Time. If I went to jump, the controls weren’t accurate enough to get me onto small ledges, and the C-button position meant that I would sometimes have to adopt the claw-hand technique from the original N64 days to be able to play, something that we all know we should have taken insurance out against back in the day. It’s one of the main reasons I’ve spent so much time playing Jiggies of Time via Airplay using a Bluetooth Controller; I’ve wanted a more accurate way of playing Kurko Mods back catalog while on the go, and now I’ve got it!
As well as looking stunning in the original N64 Grey controller colour design with all the same coloured face buttons used to make it easily apparent ‘what does what’, this skin makes playing any Banjo Game a breeze. Having the C-buttons underneath the left stick is a great touch, and having two Z buttons (one purple in the iconic Gamecube style on the right and a small Z button above the left stick) makes pulling up moves like the Talon Trot and firing eggs a breeze. The right stick is a D-pad input; I haven’t actually needed to use this yet, but having it there is certainly handy! Both sticks have a textured look that tricks the mind into feeling that they’re very grippy. They look super real and move smoothly when touched.
There are also two B buttons depending on where you like your thumb to sit, making attacking much easier, as well as quick save and load buttons on the top of the skin so you don’t need to open up the menu – Sean thinks of everything! The Delta button in the top right-hand corner next to the right shoulder button takes you to your menu, and the turbo button which can easily be toggled on and off certainly helps when trying to get through annoying cutscenes.
While I try to test out all handhelds, controllers, and skins with Banjo games as they’re so demanding when it comes to button mapping, but I’ve also put a few other games through their paces. Mario Kart 64, 40 Winks, and Diddy Kong Racing all worked perfectly and were a joy to play… which is why this article has taken so much longer to write!
Sean has said on his Threads account that he’s working to remove the overscan in the next release and enlarging the playable area to make the screen bigger, but it doesn’t stop it from being perfectly playable and enjoyable right now. Sean operates a pay-what-you-feel system over on his Gumroad page, so head on over and grab this skin for your N64 Delta collection!
