I can remember when the first initial teaser images of the new Donkey Kong Country Expansion at Super Nintendo World hit the internet. Our reaction was, as you can imagine, pretty intense. I’ve been a lifelong DK fan and regularly play Donkey Kong Country on the SNES while kicking back in my office. And as of last night’s Nintendo Direct, we now know all about what’s in the newest part of the park and have been looking at how much flights cost to Japan ever since!
DK’s new attraction is opening its doors at Universal Studios Japan on December 11th and is filled to the brim with exciting features designed to help us celebrate Donkey Kong to the max. Collect KONG letters using a power band just like in the SNES game, play a three-player Donkey Konga game, get a picture with the main man (monkey) himself, and hit lights in time until Rambi the Rhino appears.
You can even take part in the Mine Cart Ride. Yes, they’ve created a rollercoaster that’s perfect for everyone, even people who don’t particularly like rollercoasters… so that’s me sorted then!
Miyamoto excitedly took us around the park on the short Direct livestream, telling us all about secret areas, spotting other Donkey Kong game characters, and other Nintendo critters who have sneaked in where they shouldn’t belong for you to spot.
The Donkey Kong Country expansion is heading to more Universal Studios sites in 2025, but for those wanting to get a slice of the action as soon as possible, I think it’s only fair that you treat yourself to an early Christmas present and book some tickets to Japan on December 11th. If I can get a flight on a Pokémon plane to Universal Studios Japan, I think my life would be complete!
