The Playdate has been a firm favourite here at Retro Dodo Towers since it released back in 2022. Its cute opening sequence, the interactive hand crank, how diddy it is – everything about it is intriguing and exciting, as is the fact that a new Season of games is set to drop next year.
The Playdate’s parent company Panic has been in the spotlight this year due to the mysterious disappearance and subsequent shady delivery of $400K of missing Playdate handhelds. I thought that would be the only news surrounding our favourite little handheld for a good while, but it turns out that in the update that dropped on YouTube on Halloween (video coming up below), it was revealed that Playdate Season Two is on its way in 2025.
That’s all the concrete news I have for you on the release at this stage, however. As to how much the new Playdate Season will cost, well that’s still a mystery. Any other Playdate aficionados out there will know that the original season came with the Playdate itself. Christa Mrgan tells us in the video that there are about 12 new games so far in Season Two, and that there’s ‘a really cool surprise thing’ on the way, but that’s all we know.
The first Playdate Season saw users getting two new games a week over a three-month period. It’s possible that Season Two will also bring 24 games to the table and that developers are halfway through creating titles for the new drop. According to Engadget, players will need to buy new games from the Catalog, but that’s all the information that anyone has been able to squeeze from the Panic PR team. As always, I’ll keep you up to date with any new leads as and when they arrive!
