We’ve been waiting very patiently for Mario Kart LEGO sets to be properly announced after the initial teaser that dropped as part of MAR10 Day, and now we finally have some pictures of who’s joining the party and an official release date!
Six new sets will be arriving on the 1st of January 2025, which just so happens to be my birthday. So, I’ve got a good idea of what people are going to be buying for me! Speaking on the new sets, Simon Kent, Design Director at the LEGO Group, Group said: “We are beyond excited to turbo-charge our LEGO Super Mario universe with the reveal of these latest Mario Kart sets, that we know fans have been eagerly waiting for. We can’t wait for builders of all ages to put their pedal to the metal and bring Mario Kart races to brick-built reality at home with friends and family.
“The brand-new LEGO Super Mario: Mario Kart sets provide an immersive building experience and capture the heart-pounding action of the beloved video game series, Simon continued, “showing fans that the world is your track like never before!”
Table of Contents
LEGO Super Mario: Mario Kart – Yoshi Bike
- Set Number: 72031
- Price: €14.99/ $14.99 / £12.99
- Pieces: 133
- Age: 7+
I think my Grandma could have done with these cones back when she was learning to play Mario Kart! This quick-build set features the iconic Green Yoshi Bike and some shells, as well as an item box and banana. While you might have been hoping for the original Yoshi, his Light-Blue cousin is still super cool!
LEGO Super Mario: Mario Kart – Standard Kart
- Set Number: (72032)
- Price: £17.99 / €19.99 / $19.99
- Pieces: 174
- Age: 7+
Toads never stop working; they’re like the Minions of the Mushroom Kingdom. Seeing Mario’s Kart in LEGO form makes me very excited; I just wish we had Mario here in the set too! Take the Super Glider on and off as you please, and get ready to have diagnostics checked in the pit by Toad!
LEGO Super Mario: Mario Kart – Donkey Kong & DK Jumbo
- Set Number: 72033
- Price: £29.99/ €34.99 / $34.99
- Pieces: 387
- Age: 8+
How cool does DK look here driving the Jumbo? Of all the sets, this kart is the one I’m looking forward to building the most. Of course, it comes with a banana too as well as a target to throw your shells at.
LEGO Super Mario: Mario Kart – Baby Mario vs. Baby Luigi
- Set Number: 72034
- Price: £24.99 / €29.99 / $29.99
- Pieces: 321
- Age: 8+
I’ve never really got the appeal of Baby Mario & Baby Luigi; I know that’s sacrilegious, but there it is. Still, this set with shells and six balloons is very cool, and the Tri-Speeder is a great vehicle that looks brilliant in LEGO form.
LEGO Super Mario: Mario Kart – Toad’s Garage
- Set Number: 72035
- Price: £34.99 / €39.99 / $39.99
- Pieces: 390
- Age: 8+
Now we’re talking! Look at the Toads getting the B-Dasher ready for action! 390 pieces of Mario Kart brilliance, complete with ramps, flames, new wheels, and more to customise your kart. I think the Toad’s helmets are very cool too; they’ve got to be so big to cover their massive heads!
LEGO Super Mario: Mario Kart – Baby Peach & Grand Prix Set
- Set Number: 72036
- Price: £69.99 / €79.99 / $79.99
- Pieces: 823
- Age: 8+
This is where it all comes together, the start line of a race filled with all the possibilities your imagination can conjure. It comes with Baby Peach in her Wild Wiggler, Toad on the Standard Bike, and Lemmy in the classic Landship Kart. There’s also a podium for the winners, the Mario Kart starting gate, obstacles, and much more. It’s the most expensive set, but it’s definitely the showpiece out of all the new sets announced.
Final Thoughts
Compared to the likes of The Mighty Bowser, the LEGO NES and TV set, and the Deku Tree, these Mario Kart sets definitely feel more like toys than showpieces. And you know what, that’s fine with me. I think we get so wrapped up in showing off LEGO and preserving it to be resold later in life that we forget the fact that is first and foremost a toy, something that we used to play with as kids and get hours of fun from.
These sets are by no means as grand as the ones I mentioned above, but the price also reflects that, making them much more affordable for fans of the Mario Kart games who want to recreate their own races on their kitchen table or out in the garden. I’m looking forward to eventually seeing Mario joining the fray and other characters like Waluigi, and I think that this is a set that we’ll be seeing new releases dropping into for a long time, probably as long as we’ve had Mario Kart 8 in the world!
We don’t have any information as to pre-order times or stockists as of yet, but as always, I’ll keep you posted when that information becomes available!
