Comedy Central has ordered a ten-part animated series based on Sega’s popular Golden Axe video game franchise. They will work alongside IP holder Sega to bring the Golden Axe animated series to life, with production courtesy of CBS Studios in association with Sony Pictures Television and Original Film.
The show will feature familiar faces from the Golden Axe video games, with heroes Ax Battler, Tyris Flare, and Gilius Thunderhead banding together to save the kingdom of Yuria from the evil giant, Death Adder.
A brand new character, the “inexperienced and underprepared” Hampton Squib, will join the veteran heroes on their adventures throughout Yuria. While the premise might sound serious, Comedy Central has described the upcoming animated series as a “hilarious and loving homage” to the Golden Axe games.
Golden Cast
Comedy Central revealed the initial cast list alongside the announcement of the Golden Axe animated series, with several high-profile actors taking starring roles in the project.
Matthew Rhys, who won an Emmy for his portrayal of Philip Jennings in spy drama The Americans, will star as everybody’s favourite green tunic-clad dwarf, Gilius Thunderhead, while Jury Duty‘s Lisa Gilroy and Spartacus‘ Liam McIntyre complete the iconic trio from the first Golden Axe, as battle sorceress Tyris Flare and barbarian warrior Ax Battler, respectively.
Another character making their way from the Mega Drive to the series is Golden Axe III’s anthropomorphic cat-man, Chronos. The announcement from Comedy Central via Deadline describes Chronos as “uncomfortably cheesy” and somebody who “can’t read a room”, despite considering themselves as “100% badass”.
Rounding out the current cast announcements is Danny Pudi, who will play newcomer Hampton Squib. Pudi is perhaps best known for his fantastic comedic appearance as Abed Nadir in the sitcom Community.
Along with the newly announced series, Golden Axe will also receive a new game in the near future, after Sega announced a slew of new entries for some of its most popular franchises at The Game Awards in December.
