A new adaptor for the PSP Go has finally unlocked Sony’s digital only handheld and provides a huge storage upgrade.

The Micro SD Memory Card Adaptor For The PSP Go, to give the mod its full name, comes courtesy of Genius Game Mods and currently retails for $12.99 on their website.

The adaptor is a new plug and play solution that allows PSP Go players to bump their internal storage up to an impressive 128gb and offers compatibility with considerably cheaper Micro SD cards, which aren’t included with the mod.

Installing the adaptor inside a PSP Go requires a tiny bit of of ‘plastic surgery’ inside the console, as modders will have to trim several plastic support tabs inside in the handheld. Failing to cut these supports will prevent users from reinstalling the PSP Go backplate.

The adaptor itself then clicks into place and is held with tape, which Genius Game Mods provide as part of the supplied kit.

PSP Go consoles shipped with 16gb of internal storage although 32gb was achievable with the use of a Memory Stick Micro M2 card. Sony’s proprietary Memory Stick Micro M2 cards offered a way for gamers to boost their internal storage on the PSP Go but the cards themselves were disproportionately expensive compared to standard SD cards.

This new PSP Go adaptor will be good news for players looking to store even more of their digital libraries on their sleek handhelds from 2009. Genius Game Mods do warn of a couple of downsides to installing the adaptor, notably that the mod is rather fragile and that MicroSD cards carrying a lot of data are likely to experience longer load times.

The original PSP received a variety of special editions during its lifespan before the PSP Go came along.

Sony’s PSP Go hit the market on the 1st of October 2009 following its unveiling at E3 during the summer.

The all-digital handheld ditched the proprietary UMD drive in favour of internal storage, with digital games available directly from the PlayStation Network.

Often considered ahead of its time, gamers failed to embrace the shift to an all-digital PlayStation handheld in 2009. After receiving several price cuts and game bundles Sony announced in April 2011 that it would discontinue production of the PSP Go and shift focus to development of the PlayStation Vita.
