Yes, you read that right folks, Husqvarna has announced that DOOM is going to be available to play on their Husqvarna Automower® NERA lawnmowers from April this year.

So, if the person in your relationship who normally does the gardening has suddenly shown increased interest in getting out and monitoring the lawn, then they’re more interested in kicking grass than making sure the begonias are thriving.

We’re now in an age where if a digital device can’t run DOOM, then it’s not even worth giving it the time of day. We’ve seen the iconic title playing on a Samsung fridge, an air hockey table, and all sorts of household items that you wouldn’t even think of.

Yes… we’re all thinking about the pregnancy test with DOOM on it. And that’s the game, not the prognosis of someone finding out that they’re pregnant!

And yet again, the retro gaming community has surprised us with the inclusion of DOOM on a selection of robot lawnmowers, which is a sentence that I definitely didn’t think I would be writing when I woke up this morning.

Level The Playing Field

The idea was first shown at the DreamHack Winter 2023 event and received an incredible response, with Husqvarna now deciding to roll the game out on all of the models used at the event.

So, if you own a Husqvarna Automower® NERA model, then you too can be playing the classic 1993 title and even hook up lawnmowers for multiplayer play!

This is an incredibly exciting partnership that we didn’t ever consider would ever come to light… mostly because Husqvarna and id Software aren’t names that you would put together in a sentence.

It’s important to note, however, that the Husqvarna Automower® NERA models aren’t handheld consoles or cheap retro consoles.

These mowers start at £2,700 (around $3,400), so this is anything but a cheap way to play DOOM. They don’t come with big screens either, but luckily DOOM isn’t that complicated to get to grips with, and from the gameplay we’ve seen, it actually plays pretty well!
