Sony has just dropped a big bomb on all of us – the highly anticipated slim Playstation 5 model has just been announced!
It was something we all knew would happen eventually. And we even heard rumors of it coming for the holiday season.
But to see it come to fruition is still a surprise and exciting to us. So let’s take a look!
Playstation 5 (Slim?)
Sadly, the updated Playstation design is not actually called “Slim” in the official marketing. But Sony has indicated that the new design is reduced in volume by more than 30% and weight by 18%.
So clearly the Playstation has been doing some serious exercise. Or the expert designers at Sony have worked their magic to minimize the internal hardware as much as possible. It’s definitely one of those two options.
The updated Digital Edition PS5 has the option for a separate attachable Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc Drive that retails for $79.99USD.
The disc drive appears to be a separate unit for both models, making the Playstation more modular than the previous iteration.
The internal storage has also been bumped up to 1TB SSD (the first iteration came with 825GB).
To accommodate for the design changes, the side panels on the console are now four panels. The top panels are glossy, and the bottom will be matte.
So we anticipate a bunch of new custom panels coming from third-party suppliers like Dbrand.
Sony has not indicated any new major tech inside the new model for game performance. So it’s the same x86-64-AMD Ryzen Zen 2 CPU powering the console.
But obviously there are a lot of little changes to the circuit board and cooling system to allow for the minimal size. We expect to see a bunch of in depth explorations of the internal configuration once the model is available for that.
And luckily… we won’t have to wait too long!

The updated Playstation 5 will be made available for purchase just in time for the holiday season this coming November.
The pricing for the updated models are $499.99USD for the PS5 with Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive and $449.99USD for the PS5 Digital Edition.
