I know what you're thinking - 'did we need a Wolfenstein 3D demake on the Atari 2600?' The answer is probably not, but that's what I love about demakes. The only thing I had planned for today was playing Donkey Kong 64 on Nintendo Switch Online, and now I've found myself listening to a bit-crushed version of the 'Get Them Before They Get You' track from Wolfenstein 3D.
And you know what, I'm digging it!
The demake comes to us from FIGCdev and is their first-ever demake. And I'm pleased to say that they didn't use any AI while making it either - they've done it the good old-fashioned way!
Wolfenstein 3D isn't the most technologically advanced game of all time, but considering it came out in 1992, 34 years ago at the time of writing, I think we can cut it some slack. It is 3D, however, so to see it remade for a console that released in 1977 is just wild.
If you've never played on an Atari 2600, then the gameplay looks just like the footage above. We're talking about the late 70s, 1977, in fact. Computer graphics were so simple back then, relying on the story and the gamer's imagination to drive the narrative. It was more about 'the suggestion' of characters and items - the brain had to do the rest.
You won't spend hours playing on this Wolfenstein 3D demake; FIGCdev has stated that you'll probably check it out for a couple of minutes at a time. Still, it's a fun little reimagining of a classic MS-DOS title, and I'm really glad I took the time to check it out!
