As a guitarist and a retro gamer, I become incredibly excited when my two passions combine. Arguably, retro gaming has kind of eaten into my guitar practicing time, but I'm alright with that, especially when I see that I can use my button-mashing skills to play some heavy metal on a guitar amp with this epic guitar pedal from Chicago-based company Console Pedals.
This modular guitar pedal is the thing that nerdy dreams are made of. Instead of using something like a Zoom or Digitech pedal with pre-installed sounds, users can insert different N64 cartridges to change the sound of their guitar. It might not be an effective use of your time while playing live unless you have a guitar tech to do it, but it's definitely cool to play with.
As a musician and retro console nerd, this is exactly the kind of weird crossover that gets my attention.

It’s a modular effects pedal that uses custom N64 style cartridges to change the sound. Different carts, different effects. Pretty fun and clever idea.… pic.twitter.com/SNP7rkDyhu
A video posted by our friends The Game Beaters on Twitter over the weekend shows the guitar pedal in action, alongside a video posted by the creator of the cartridges and pedal, Thomas McDonagh, showing the cartridges in action, alongside the fact that you can plug in an N64 controller and make sounds straight away using the Synth Controller cartridge.
The cartridges themselves all have custom artwork and great names like A Silly Scope, Grazer Phazer, and Buzz Fuzz. They're priced between $69-79, while the base pedal (currently sold out) costs $179.99. As the base unit has two slots, you can switch between sounds at the push of a pedal. Honestly, it's one of the coolest things I've ever seen!
