I know that's a big statement considering we're only at the start of the week, but I'm going out on a limb here, as this is one of the coolest things I think I've ever seen!
We've covered the Game Boy Camera a lot here at Retro Dodo, and rightfully so. It's possibly the first pocketable camera ever created and has inspired generations of photographers to capture their favourite scenes in a retro form. I've written about people making zooms for the camera, and even new cartridges that take the camera to the next level. But this working prototype of the GBD-M2 by Bluesky user Game Boy Camera is an absolute work of art.
After years of work, Game Boy Camera (the user, not the camera itself!) has finally managed to fit Game Boy Pocket and Game Boy Camera chips into a camera casing for taking pictures naturally, just like you would with a standard digital camera.

And here's another great feature: even though it looks like a Ricoh GR, it still has Game Boy Pocket compatibility inside. Talking about the cart section on the top of the camera, the creator tells us, 'It's an ultra-compact Game Boy cart which still detaches, using a CS Mount for lenses.' She goes on to say that, 'You could modify it for other lens mounts.'
That also means that you can play games on it too!
Once the project reaches a place where she's happy with it, the creator is going to release the files to the public so that they can build their own. I would love to have one of these, and the option to purchase a premade unit just for snapping pictures while I'm out and about. I know I have a tonne of Game Boys at my disposal, but I feel like this is something I would just keep in my bag at all times to capture on the fly. It's a great little invention, and the design is flawless!
