I know - that's a wild title to try to get to grips with, but hear me out. Back in 1989, there was a version of Tetris that was supposed to release on the Sega Mega Drive. When Nintendo obtained the rights to Tetris, Sega had to cancel their launch, but there are a few boxed copies of the game out there in the wild which, as you can imagine, are worth a pretty penny nowadays.
The game was finally released on the Sega Mega Drive mini back in 2019, and now, a gamer and ROM hacker called BillyTime!Games (thanks Renpou.com) has taken the ROM of the game and brought it kicking and screaming into 2026 with features that we've come to know and love on Tetris games over the years.
Billy's 'Tetris Redux' ROM hack takes the original Sega version of Tetris and adds new features like a high-score save function, high-speed dropping, a 7-bag system, hold functions, and more. As he says on X, he just likes fixing bad games, but he's essentially revitalised a classic with quality-of-life features that new Tetris fans will love.
