If you've ever wondered what The Last of Us might have looked like if it released in the 90s instead of in 2013, then you're in for a treat. I recently came across this new retro reimagining from DANEGUSTA featuring Eliana and Jorel, characters that they say are definitely completely made-up entities, adding to the parody nature of this release.
The game feels very much like it might have dropped on the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive, a horror version of Toe-Jam & Earl meets Streets of Rage with a bit of Maniac Mansion thrown in for good measure, perhaps. Eliana must explore an abandoned hospital on a mission to nab collectibles and pump The Infected full of lead while finding Jorel... it sounds familiar, but it's not, so stop thinking it, alright?

The game is dark and moody, and the infected move fast. There are lots of flashing lights too, just to make things feel even creepier. Honestly, if you thought a top-down game couldn't be scary, then you're very much mistaken!
I love the fact that DANEGUSTA has used himself as a quote for how good the game is too; that's something I've definitely done in the past on eBooks. It's a great little project, and it's free to download for anyone who wants to give it a try. Head to the official Itch.io project page for more information!
