Was there a bigger rivalry than Sonic vs Mario during the 90s? Some of you might have said 'yeah, Blur and Oasis', but you would be wrong. Nintendo and Sega were at loggerheads throughout the entire decade, each citing their poster boy (or poster hog) as the best.
That rivalry has continued to this day too, with Brandon and I having different opinions on who is best as we grew up with different consoles. I was always a Nintendo boy, Brandon a Sega kid. But come on, we would have loved to have seen Mario stepping into Sonic's world back in the day.
Can you imagine if someone had made this game in the midst of the 90s? It would have been the ultimate shock factor, the title that either ended the console wars or made them spiral so far out of control that the world of gaming imploded in on itself.
Thanks to PixelMarioXP, you can see Mario stepping into Sonic's shoes as he makes his way through the original levels in Sonic the Hedgehog for the Sega Master System. Essentially, it just replaces Sonic with Mario, who runs a little slower than our blue blur. It changes the life icons, the 1-up Monitor, the end goalposts and act result screens, and the title screen. The levels themselves remain untouched.
It definitely makes a change to see Mario fighting Dr Robotnik instead of Bowser, and as someone who sees how iconic and influential Sonic & Mario are to the world of gaming, it feels like the ultimate tribute to the 90s while being the most blasphemous game around at the same time.
