Thanks to a recent Korean rating submission, we are now anticipating an incoming Sonic Origins Plus remaster collection from Sega.
Where the original Origins collection was lacking in content, we can now hope to have a more definitive Sonic experience for the Nintendo Switch.
And rumor has it… it’s coming much sooner than you’d think.
Update: Of course Sega dropped the official announcement hours after the rumors hit. So it's no longer rumor, it's fact: Sonic Origins Plus is coming on Sonic’s birthday: June 23, 2023. They also confirmed the price rumors ($9.99 upgrade, $39.99 new purchase) and that the update will bring 12 Game Gear titles to the collection.
Sonic Origins was released in June of 2022 and featured remastered versions of the first four games of the beloved franchise.
That’s Sonic the Hedgehog (1991), Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (1992), Sonic CD (1993), and Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles (1994).
Needless to say, this was a pretty awesome collection to have on modern consoles.
But it also is important to note that it was missing some pretty important titles (no “Mean Bean Machine”?!).
Even 2002’s Sonic Mega Collection and 2004’s Sonic Mega Collection Plus featured a lot more games. Not remastered, but still a lot more content.
So the only way to rectify this problem is to re-release the remastered collection.
And lucky for us, that seems to be coming!
Sonic Origins Plus
Gematsu has reported that the Game Rating and Administration Committee of Korea had a recent submission for a mysterious title: “Sonic Origins Plus”. Well… I guess that’s actually not all that mysterious, is it?
We often have accidental online listings and rating submissions to thank for early leaks of upcoming video game titles.
And Sonic Mania also had its own “Plus” edition, so it would be no surprise to see an expanded Origins package.
The current rumor is saying that we can expect Sonic Origins Plus to release on the Nintendo Switch in June 2023.
Comicbook.com says that it will be a $9.99 expansion for owners of Sonic Origins, or a $39.99 collection if purchased new.
Needless to say.. this is incredible. With Origins being a remaster, we should expect that all of the added titles would be enhanced a bit more than we’ve seen in the past.
So we now have the true definitive Sonic collection available on current gen consoles.
And thankfully, if we already purchased Sonic Origins, it’s a small price to pay to get the full expansion.
