It's not often we see ROM hacks of Pokémon Blue; it's usually Pokémon Emerald or Pokémon FireRed that modders head straight for, but for xillicis, the only game that'll do is Pokémon Blue. They've come up with a new storyline for Pokémon Blue and a whole host of new features to revitalise it with a haunting tale just in time for Halloween.
Shade over Kanto sees players travelling over Kanto in a bid to find out more about the threat that haunts Professor Oak. It's a cool touch, as he's not really a massive character in the original game apart from giving you your starter and cropping up now and again to tell you you can't use items.

The game has 100+ new Pokémon and new Pokémon types. There are new moves, and, as xillicis puts it, 'an all-star cast of challenging gym leaders' to battle through. What's more, there's also a Nuzlocke mode where you can really put your skills to the test.
It would have been wild to see the original Pokémon Blue with an M for mature rating because of the crude humour in it. And one of the best bits is that it's made without any AI! This is an old-school ROM hack made by and in conjunction with members of the ROM hacking community who love Pokémon Blue!

I love the fact that there are Pokémon and moves from different Pokémon Gens featuring in a Game Boy hack with Gen 1 graphics. I would love to see someone picking up this version of the game, seeing a Furry challenging them, and then wondering what the heck was going on! It's definitely a unique story!
Nuzlocke rules aren't for the faint of heart, so I would only tackle this hack if you have a lot of patience or are already bald with no hair left to pull out! Head to Hackdex to download and patch onto your copy of Pokémon Blue!
