I've been singing the praises of the SC64 while playing around with the Analogue Pocket, playing my favourite ROM hacks and delving into alternative adventures that I've never experienced before. It's a great bit of kit, but it would be more authentic if you could see game art on the cartridge itself for each title.
I came across a post from Pixel Cherry Ninja on X of a new flashcart made by David Brito, who has turned this thought into a reality. David has a big history of modding retro consoles, having adapted N64s to be powered by USB-C, working with HDMI mods, and creating better controller solutions. He even made a built-in display for the Xbox 360 which is incredibly cool!
Seeing the Screendrive 64 in action is very satisfying, switching through game cart artwork as though you were actually looking through your game collections. But how is it made?
Well, according to the ReCollect 64 blog, David makes these carts with a 128mb FPGA and a hardware-compatible PicoCart, all built inside a shell that he 3D prints himself which has room for him to attach a screen into the mix.
An N64 Flash Cart with a built in screen that shows the games label, and who knows, maybe one day it'll run Doom.

One thing I will say, and it's been mirrored by other publications, is that it's slightly annoying that the screen isn't the right size for the label art it shows. There is a little bit that gets cut off at the bottom, like with the Rare logo for Diddy Kong Racing above. If that was sorted out and there was a way to make the full artwork appear as intended, then it would be perfect. Would I still buy one for the novelty in the meantime? Probably, because it's a cool gimmick. But I hope David continues to improve on the design and find a way to resolve that small detail.
You can pick one up for Mex$ 1200 when David has stock, which works out at about £50 if you're here in the UK or $67 for our US readers. David has previously sold these carts from Facebook, so keep an eye out or reach out to him on YouTube for more information!
