I can remember reading about Quest 64, or Holy Magic Century as it's named here in the UK, in Nintendo Official Magazine so much as a kid. It was one of those games that I became obsessed with and read about repeatedly, but for some reason never got hold of back in the day. I remember heading down to my local game shop to try to pick it up a number of times, but it was never in stock.
I picked up a copy while visiting a retro gaming shop in Vienna last year and finally righted that wrong, and it was definitely worth the wait, despite the pretty dismal reviews it had back in the day. As an RPG fan, I love it, but perhaps that's due to almost 3 decades of romanticising it!
As covered by Read Only Memo, the Quest 64 recompilation has glorious 60fps visuals (which you can see in the video below). It's currently in beta in version 0.1, though it's already at a finished state where you can play it from the beginning to the end, all with a higher resolution than the original, too.
As it's in beta, there are still some bugs that need ironing out once the fans in the Quest 64 Discord have finished playing and dissecting it. Eventually, the plan is to make a recompiled version with new features, which could truly give it a new lease of life.
The same person working on the recompile is also working on recompiling Eltale Monsters, the enhanced version of the game that released in Japan which had many more features, so perhaps if you were disappointed with Holy Magic Century/Quest 64 the first time around, maybe hold out for this one!
You might not be as excited as Mytical Ninja starring Goemon or Majora's Mask being recompiled, or even Dinosaur Planet finally coming the the fold. But for someone like me who lived and breathed this game in the pages of NOM, having a 60fps version of Quest 64/Holy Magic Century is fantastic. I'm really interested to see what new features are added to the game. Maybe they might make the world more sparse... just saying!
