Popular Modder WeskMods Announces New Sega Saturn Slim Project

There’s no denying that the SEGA Saturn is one of the most popular retro games consoles of the past, it was one of SEGA’s greatest and is still loved by many to this day. SEGA has created “mini” versions of their consoles over the last few years, but removed the cartridge slots to decrease size and to allow for pre-loaded games instead.

But what if SEGA re-released the SEGA Saturn in a new form factor? Well, that’s the question that infamous modder WeskMods asked, and has decided to answer that question himself.

We had the pleasure of inviting Weskmods on our podcast back in August, with Episode 69 discussing the origins of his tinkering, what he has loved working on and what he plans to do in the future.

His most recent creation being the Nintendo Kawaii, a Nintendo Wii modified to fit on your keychain… I am not joking. It was a co-creation with another modder named YveltalGriffin, both minds collided to create the impossible and both modders are quickly on a rampage to create even more interesting modifications.

WeskMod’s latest creation being the SEGA Saturn Slim, a heavily modified SEGA Saturn with less love handles. According to Wesk it “requires a VA-SG board, support for Saroo or Fenrir and won’t require any board trimming”.

The renders made are beautiful, and when compared to the original SEGA Saturn its noticeably smaller and looks like a stunning modern remake that I really need in my life. It’s almost comparable to the Hitachi Sega Saturn in many ways.

Wesk also mentions on X: “It’s still early days but early real-world fitment tests have me pretty confident that this shouldn’t be much of a challenge to complete. Additional mounting and little things still need to be added (LED guides and other little finicky things)”.

You will notice that the CD-Drive no longer exists, and is one of the parts that takes up most space. Instead Wesk is keeping the use of the single cartridge slot which can work with such accessories as the Fenrir and Saroo flash cart. I know many will miss the ability to load the Saturn CD Games, but it’s a needed sacrifice to keep this thing lean and mean.

I look forward to seeing WeskMod’s updates no this as I know it will go down well with the retro gaming community, plus Wesk has a habit of creating real, high end modifications that doesn’t feel like it’s been made with Kinder Egg toys.
