What happens when you take the feel of Pokémon and mix it with intense survival elements of a game like Vampire Survivors? The answer: a Pokémon ROM hack like no other that puts you up against waves and waves of enemies trying to take you down.
We all remember Vampire Survivors blowing up in popularity a few years ago... I think it probably accounts for why one of my relationships dwindled from me playing it far too much, but I digress. It was a great game that we became super addicted to at Retro Dodo Towers, so it's nice to head back into a fangame that matches that same kind of feel with our biggest love - Pokémon.
The game comes to us from ClessioTV and currently has 25 Pokémon available to use, but you won't be able to plunge into battle with all of them straight away. Each run will give you a chance to evolve your Pokémon and unlock more. You'll need to think tactically and build a unique attack strategy to survive, using ultimate attacks 'unique to the burst system'.
You'll pick different ways to upgrade your Pokémon and build up their skill tree in some Gauntlet Dark Legacy-style tactical action - can you imagine taking on Garm with a Bulbasaur? Pokémon can be developed in the following ways:
- Passive Skills — Enhance your Pokémon and create your own unique strategy.
- Multiple Attacks — Combine different attacks throughout each run.
- Burst Attacks — Powerful ultimate attacks that are unique to the game's burst system.
- Evolutions — Evolve your Pokémon as you move through each round.
- Build Synergies — Combine attacks, passives, and other effects in builds that get gradually more complex.
ClessioTV has stated that the ROM hack is constantly being improved, with new Pokémon, attacks/attack types, mechanics, and build combinations coming to the fangame over the coming months. Currently, you can play Pokémon Survivor Burst on Mac, Windows, and Mobile, and there's an in-game leaderboard that you can show off your high scores to other players with, adding that old-school arcade vibe to the equation!
