Pokémon Brown holds a special place in our hearts for essentially kicking off the Pokémon ROM hacking movement. It was released back in 2004 by Koolboyman and was the first ROM hack of Pokémon Red to actually change the entire story.
It brought in a new region, Rijon, a new narrative, and created an entirely different game. It spawned sequels and also inspired people to get into ROM hacking and to create many of the alternative adventures that we play on a daily basis here at Retro Dodo.

And now, Rainbow Devs, the team who have been working on keeping Pokémon Brown and its sequels alive in recent years, have announced a 3D version of the ROM hack that started off everything. They've been working on this 3D version of the game for over 3 years, revamping the region of Rijon (which I now realise just sounds like region) for you to experience in a whole new light.
We're very proud today to launch a new game: Pokémon Brown 3D!

It's a custom Game Mode for Pokémon 3D that lets you explore Rijon in all three dimensions. It even has multiplayer support!https://t.co/PYiwGhdFxO pic.twitter.com/8VroFUVxF1
In essence, Pokémon Brown 3D is a custom game mode for Kolben Games' Pokémon 3D, turning Pokémon Brown 20th Anniversary into a bona fide three-dimensional experience. The game holds 231 Pokémon for you to capture, Pokémon following you around, new abilities, colour maps, and much more. It feels a little like Pokémon meets Minecraft and Myst, with day and night cycles adding extra intrigue to the gameplay.

And it also comes with multiplayer support too! Players will be able to host their own private servers for friends or jump in public servers to play with other Pokémon Brown fans from all over the world.
