I love two player games like It Takes Two and Unravel 2. They take me back to the days of couch co-op games, from Yoshi’s Wooly World all the way back to playing Donkey Kong Country & Super Mario All-Stars with a friend holding the other controller.
More and more ROM hacks are heading our way that are adding two player compatibility to old games that were only ever intended for one person; just take a look at the DK Bros ROM hack as an example. We can now add Duck Tales to the list, with this latest hack from MechanicCDRR giving us the chance to play as Scrooge McDuck and Darkwing Duck together, battling foes and solving puzzles in completely redesigned levels. Duck Tales 2: New Journey 2 Players, as the name suggests, can’t be completed by just one player; you’re going to need another NES fan to help you get to the end!
The game is based on Duck Tales 2 and the ROM Hack Duck Tales 2: A New Journey which is an existing MechanicCDRR ROM Hack. It’s a ROM hack notorious for making it’s players search carefully for hidden objects and passageways, a game true to my own heart. Working in conjunction with Ti_ who created the two-player hack element, MechanicCDRR has created a new offering with modified bosses and newly designed levels to mix things up for seasoned fans of their earlier work. There are a couple of known bugs that on the Niagra level that have been pointed out on the project’s page, but apart from that the hack is currently running smoothly!
I’ve always loved Darkwing Duck and wished that we had seen him in more games over the years, so to have both Scrooge and Darkwing fighting side-by-side on a NES ROM Hack suits me down to the ground! Give it a go, and take a look at some of these other hacks of NES games while you’re at it!
