Mike Tyson Wants To Make A New Punch-Out Game With Nintendo

  • January 6, 2021

With Wii Sports Boxing and Arms proving to be so popular over the years, there’s no wonder that Mike Tyson has spoken publically about making a new Punch-Out game for the Nintendo Switch.

That’s right, folks; it looks like the original NES classic is returning after 33 years! Now that’s a boxing comeback that will definitely make headlines!

In a new podcast episode on Impaulsive by Logan Paul with the man himself, Mike Tyson said the words that sports games fans have all been waiting for – ‘We’re gonna make another one’. There you have it; straight from the horse’s mouth.

Not that we’re calling you a horse, Mike, or any other animal. If you were an animal, then you’d be a tiger… or a bear… (please, don’t hurt us!).

A New Punch-Out Game For 2021?

New Punch Out Game - Original graphics from 1987

What Is Punch-Out?

Mike Tysons Punch-Out is a NES game from 1987. And yes, it’s as awesome as you might be imagining.

Some readers may know this game simply as ‘Punch-Out!!’ due to Nintendo’s license to use Tyson’s name expiring in 1990. Still, Mike made the original game a household name and a massive hit, and a sequel would make 2021 so much sweeter.

How Does Punch-Out Work?

Ever played as Little Mac on Super Smash Bros. Ultimate? Well, players control Little Mac through a series of boxing bouts, with each new opponent increasing in difficulty.

Once every boxer has been defeated, players fight off against Mike Tyson. You ask anyone who has played this game, and they’ll tell you that Tyson remains the toughest video game boss of all time. The same goes for his re-skin in the non-endorsed version, Mr Dream.

How Might a New Punch-Out Game Work?

The idea is still in its infancy, but if Tyson sets his mind to something, you know it’s gonna get done.

And now is a great time to do it. With Nintendo’s push on keeping fit while gaming still prominent in titles like Ring Fit Adventure for the Switch, a new interactive Punch Out game would sit very well with gamers.

Not sit; you’re meant to stand while boxing!

Remember the Wii Boxing gloves that we covered as part of the best Wii accessories? Well, we could see a new Punch-Out game shipping with gloves containing joycon holders. That way, players could really feel part of the action.

As to how the game might look, you can forget about a 2D Street Fighter style game or a side-scrolling brawler like Streets of Rage. Tyson’s new game is going to be all about getting up close and personal in the ring. He wants to recreate the magic of boxing for everyone, so expect to work up a sweat once you turn this title on!

This might even make a great launch title for the Nintendo Switch Pro!

When Will A New Punch-Out Game Be Released?

2021 would be the perfect year for Tyson’s new project to drop. With another lockdown underway and no gyms open, this game would really allow us to let off steam and get fit at the same time.

Tyson seems keen, and we’re confident that he’ll make this happen sooner rather than later. Though, if he decides to push it back to 2022, we won’t argue. I saw him square up against Chris Jericho recently; I wanna stay on his good side!

What do you think about a new Punch-Out game dropping? Would this be on your wishlist for 2021? Join the conversation on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram!
