For those of you that love your retro handheld devices in a mini form factor you will be happy to know that ANBERNIC are releasing an updated version of the popular RG35XX that launched in early 2023.
ANBERNIC sent us an email stating that their new RG35XX will be called the “RGX35XX 2024”, packing in new specs to keep up with the current market and to compete with other “mini handhelds”.
Instead of using the original Quad-core ARM Cortex-A9 CPU the 2024 model will feature the H700 Quad-Core ARM Cortex-A52 CPU that was used in the RG35XX Plus that launched later in 2023.
According to Retro Game Corps on Twitter, it will also come with the smaller 2600MAH battery still and won’t have Bluetooth or Wifi, but it will feature 1GB RAM, which is a heft upgrade from the 256MB previously.
This is likely to entice some enthusiasts into buying the RG35XX Plus, although if ANBERNIC price this competitively it’s likely not going to be worth the upgrade at all.
I personally had mixed feeling about the RG35XX, only because of the plastic used. It felt a little too cheap when compared to the Miyoo Mini and it’s put to shame by the recent metal Game Kiddy Pixel, so I believe ANBERNIC will need to be very aggressive with their pricing strategy on this one because the “mini” market is filling up fast.
It’s very likely that the new model will look identical too, with very minor changes. The only changes will be internally.
In terms of release date and pricing nothing is official yet, but if I had to guess it’s likely this will be officially announced in April with pre-orders going live upon announcement, meaning a late April or early May release.
I would like to think they would price this between $40 – $60 but time will tell.
