After quite a lot of speculation, we finally have an official trailer for the next Mortal Kombat game. Meet Mortal Kombat 1.
And, as rumors suggested, the next game in the franchise is a reboot for the series.
It was just one week ago that a leak suggested that Mortal Kombat 12 might be a Mortal Kombat 1 remake. It was unclear if we were looking at a remake of the first game or a reboot of some sort.
The new trailer clears that up, and we see characters that span the franchise in what appears to be some sort of new era in the MK universe.
So, reboot it is!
Before we break down the details, do yourself a favor and check out this fantastic trailer:
Mortal Kombat 1
The rumors were correct and the next entry in the MK franchise will be titled “Mortal Kombat 1”.
I even got the logo correct in our previous article about it!
As to be expected from a project coming from NetherRealm, this game looks beautiful.
We only see cutscenes and finishing moves shown in the trailer, but the quality of the CG is as good as it gets.
The mood starts out innocent enough. It almost seemed like we were entering into an age of peace and tranquility.
But obviously, things go south very quick.
And the violence. Oh, the violence. This trailer didn’t hold back at all.
The fatalities shown were as over the top and bloody as you’d hope for in the latest addition to the Mortal Kombat series. I’m not even sure if it’s a good idea to show them here on the website!
No actual game play appeared in this first reveal trailer; that’s Something exciting to look forward to in the near future.
The Mortal Kombat website also clarifies that this is “a reborn Mortal Kombat Universe created by the Fire God Liu Kang.”
“Mortal Kombat 1 ushers in a new era of the iconic franchise with a new fighting system, game modes, and fatalities!”
So it looks like we will be seeing big changes coming to what we know about Mortal Kombat.
It’s still unclear how big those changes will be. The “new fighting system” is the part that sounds most intriguing and worrisome.
But if we know anything, we know that NetherRealm tends to get things quite right, so we shouldn’t be too worried about changes to the system.
Release Date and Preorder
The preorders for Mortal Kombat 1 begin on May 19th at 10am Pacific Time. With a worldwide release set for September 19th, 2023.
The closed beta will take place in August on Playstation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.
Mortal Kombat 1 will release for those consoles as well as the Steam Store, Epic Games Store, and on the Nintendo Switch.
What a perfect way to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Mortal Kombat franchise in what looks to be the best entry in the series!
