We've known about ModRetro throwing their hat into the N64 FPGA game for a while now, and after Analogue's constant delays and failure to give us information about their 3D console, I'm all for it. You guys know that we love the Chromatic and how easy it was to get hold of one the first time around, not to mention the fact that they're back in stock for good now. So, the fact that ModRetro have already confirmed the new M64 console will cost $199.99 and reportedly arrive in time for Christmas fills me with confidence.
Palmer Luckey teased the M64 in a recent post on X. And as for the Christmas part, there's a console hidden inside what looks like Santa's sack with a little sign on it saying 'no peeking until Christmas on it'. I know that's not a lot to go on, but all signs are pointing to ModRetro capitalising on people's frustrations with Analogue and giving them what they want - an actual FPGA N64.
ModRetro's newest product is M64. The best and most authentic way to play your favorite N64 games, bar none. Prepare your wallet and brace your mind.

You read that last bit right - 'Launches at the same price as the original Nintendo 64. Inflation isn't nostalgic'. The ModRetro team are keeping everything as close to the original as possible, using FPGA to recreate the N64's working on a hardware level though with 4K visuals set to rival Analogues offerings.
The Chromatic is one of the strongest handhelds we've ever experienced, and it has such an incredible feel to it too. I wouldn't be surprised if ModRetro brought out the M64 in similar colour schemes with cool accessories to boot. They've made a point of putting 'black and white is boring' on their website landing page for the M64!
And what's more, they've already done so much for the handheld scene by bringing out new Game Boy games for the system, and I'm confident we'll be seeing new N64 games dropping that are playable on both the M64 and the N64 throughout 2026 too.
