One of things that I love the most about ModRetro is their mission to preserve the past. The Chromatic is the ultimate Game Boy and gives us a new way to play our favourite Game Boy and Game Boy Color games. But that's not where the story ends, because ModRetro have been working with new developers to bring out new Game Boy games like Dragonyhm and Chantey, and they've also brought back niche titles that people never got to play the first time around or titles that were cancelled and never saw the light of day.

That's exactly what they're doing with the M64 too. Not only will be getting a machine that uses FPGA to recreate the internals components of hte N64 on a hardware level alongside 4K graphics powered by AMD, but we're also getting brand new titles and games that were cancelled and never saw a release.

As someone who loves the N64 more than his own family (sorry, guys), this is the most exciting news ever. I grew up with this console, the controller shaped like a bunch of bananas gripped tightly in my hands while playing games like Banjo-Kazooie, Mario Kart 64, Ocarina of Time, and GoldenEye, which you can see in crisp 4K in the video below.

Not only is the M64 going to change the way we play our favourite games (and make them look how we thought they looked back in the day), but it's also going to open up infinite adventures in the form of these new titles, with Palmer himself confirming that ModRetro has 'a crazy-good library of new, old, and never-released titles coming!'

Let's think about this for a second - could we actually be getting an official version of 40 Winks, the game I read so much about in Nintendo Official Magazine back in the day, and could ModRetro work with Piko Interactive to bring it and Glover 2 to the console? Could Dinosaur Planet finally find it's home on an M64 cartridge, or Quest 2, the sequel to Quest 64/Holy Magic Century?

It also opens up possibilities for titles like Dragonyhm to get an N64 style game in the future too, and developers to come back to make sequels to beloved games. Rare, if you're listening, it's time to right the wrongs of Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts and make a proper Banjo-Kazooie game again!

And also, those purple carts look amazing. They go with the Retro Dodo logo pretty nicely too!

The M64 is set to ship with a controller (which means you don't need to buy one to actually play the console), and we're assuming that there will be bundles available from the off so that you can purchase a console and a game, just like how the Chromatic shipped with Tetris. More information on the design and colourways of the console is heading our way this Friday, so we might find more out then!

As always, I'll be keeping you up to date on every piece of news on the M64 as and when it happens, so make sure to sign up to our free newsletter to get all of the info straight into your inbox every Monday!
