Modder Turns Broken PS4 Controller Into a Retro Games Console

ps4 controller console

I know we’ve just had the news that PS3 emulation has come to Raspberry Pi 5, but one modder has been working with the Raspberry Pi Zero 2W to turn a broken PS4 controller into a Retro Games console. Don’t worry, it was a broken controller, but now it has a new lease of life as a console that plays everything from NES to PS1 games.

There’s something poetic about a PlayStation 4 controller that plays PS1 games. There’s also something mad about it too, and we’ve got modder and first-time Raspberry Pi creator ConsciousFish6170 to thank for this interesting project. They have put a Raspberry Pi 2 inside a mostly hollowed-out PS4 controller, creating space for the Raspberry Pi but leaving features like the joysticks intact. Yes, you read that right – this is his first time attempting to use a Raspberry Pi and emulators, and it’s an ambitious project to take on!

ConsciousFish has used RetroPie as their emulator of choice, giving us access to NES, SNES, PS1, GBA, and N64 games, although they admittedly stated that N64 isn’t running great at the minute. Hey, we love the honesty! There are two USB-C mini adapters for the power supply and a USB hub to load ROMs onto the controller via a micro SD, the kind we see in many of the handhelds we review here at Dodo HQ.

Head to ConsciousFish’s Reddit page to see some more pictures of the project in action and to find out more about his first-time Raspberry Pi modding antics!
