While the Game Gear allowed us to take TV shows out of the house and into the great outdoors, it never joined the Game Boy in getting a camera accessory. I guess they were happy to just push the TV Tuner peripheral and not stray into Nintendo's territory, but the idea of taking pictures on the go was always more appealing to me than watching TV on the tiny screen, even if the TV Tuner is one of the most retro-looking peripherals of all time.

Well, one modder by the name of Toxa has managed to create a Game Gear Camera in 2025, using original Game Boy Camera hardware and a custom ROM built for the Sega Game Gear running via a cart adapter. Take a look at the camera in action below.

Toxa has uploaded the ROM source code for free on GitHub, and the Game Boy to Game Gear cart adapter documentation will follow as soon as Toxa has completed it. The cart adapter will also allow other Game Boy games to be played on the Game Gear.

One X user commented that the project would look better if the camera were in colour, but that's not what this project is about. Toxa values the nostalgia of the Game Boy Camera, "with its gorgeous 128x114px in 4 color and the Bayer dithering," to use his words. It's kind of a Frankenstein, 'playing God' feeling to see the Game Boy Camera running on a Game Gear, but no more than seeing Mario Kart 64 running on the Dreamcast!

It seems that the Sega modding community is slowly working to bring more and more Nintendo games and hardware to Sega consoles - I can't wait to see Ocarina of Time running on Dreamcast - now that would be something special!
