Interactive Super Mario World Lego Set With Mario And Yoshi Revealed

Lego Mario and Yoshi Box Art

Thanks to the eagle-eyed AFOL (that’s Adult Fan of Lego, for the unititiated) over at Jay’s Brick Blog, we’ve got our first look at the Super Mario World inspired Mario and Yoshi interactive Lego set.

Numbered as LEGO 71438, the set recreates the timeless, iconic look of Mario and Yoshi’s first ever pairing, from 1990 SNES launch title, Super Mario World. Depicting Mario (in his snazzy cape) riding the friendly green dinosaur, Yoshi, it even has an interactive element, in the form of a crank that can be turned to make Yoshi’s arms and legs move, as well as stick his very distinctive and versatile tongue out. Looking more closely at the various images, it seems as if Mario’s cape is also capable of movement too.

Jay’s Brick Blog spotted the set being listed for pre-order at a Singaporean LEGO Certified Store, and has noted the release date as being the 1st of October 2024. The price for this 1,215-piece set hasn’t been revealed as of yet, but (again, thanks to Jay’s Brick Blog!), we know that its Singaporean Dollar price is $209.99. That currently translates to around $256 US dollars, so our suspicion is that it’ll be priced around the $250 mark.

Lego and Nintendo have been collaborating an awful lot recently, with their excellent, highly interactive Super Mario set range expanding massively, Animal Crossing sets having also been released and even Zelda sets on the way. Their higher end, larger sets, such as the new Mario and Yoshi set, their impressively huge Bowser and the Piranha Plant pictured above are definitely more geared to the AFOL sector of the Lego market, however, and do a fantastic job of recreating famous video game imagery and characters, for fans to build and proudly display, regardless of their age.

Here at Retro Dodo Towers, we certainly can’t wait to get our hands on Mario and Yoshi to add to our own ever-increasing Lego collections, but if it’s a bit out of your price range, check out our guide to 6 video game themed Lego sets under $30!
