After a few months of silence, we now have solid details about the new retro game brand HyperMegaTech and their upcoming products.

This new brand from Blaze Entertainment, the makers of the Evercade, was announced back in April of 2023. And since that time, we’ve been dying to know what they planned on announcing.

Now that we know, it’s actually almost exactly what we had anticipated and discussed here at Retro Dodo studios.

So let’s all take a look together, and see what fun new stuff is coming from HyperMegaTech.

Why HyperMegaTech?

One of the biggest questions we had when we heard the announcement about HMT earlier this year was why would Blaze Entertainment need to create a new brand?

Luckily, they addressed this question on their website:

“[The] Evercade [..] is focused on recreating the classic gaming experience, but Blaze Entertainment’s expertise encompasses multiple entertainment product industries. HyperMegaTech allows us to make a variety of products with multiple properties and licensors.”

– Blaze Entertainment

So basically they felt like a new brand allows for non-Evercade products and collaborations with more properties in the retro gaming niche.

That all being said, we still didn’t have a great idea of what HyperMegaTech intended to offer us… until today!

HyperMegaTech Super Pocket

Today’s HyperMegaTech livestream was focused on the announcement of a new line of handheld game consoles, the Super Pocket.

These are small pocket friendly handheld devices, à la the My Arcade Pocket Player series.

Much like the My Arcade handhelds, these new Super Pockets will come loaded with licensed arcade game classics.

And HyperMegaTech went very big with the launch of the Super Pocket, bringing in two awesome brands of retro gaming royalty – Capcom and TAITO.

Super Pocket Capcom Edition

HyperMegaTech Super Pocket

The Super Pocket Capcom Edition features 12 total games from Capcom, including Street Fighter II’: Hyper Fighting, Final Fight, Ghouls ‘N Ghosts, 1942, Captain Commando, Mega Man, and more.

It sports a blue and yellow color scheme with the Capcom logo right there on the screen bezel.

Super Pocket TAITO Edition

HyperMegaTech Super Pocket

Their Super Pocket TAITO Edition comes with 17 games, including Space Invaders, Operation Wolf, The New Zealand Story, Bubble Bobble, Elevator Action, and more.

Like in the Capcom edition, this one has the TAITO logo right on the screen bezel. And this particular handheld comes in a unique black and green color combination.

Super Pocket – More Details

HyperMegaTech Super Pocket

Something really unique about the new Super Pocket handhelds are that they are also compatible with Evercade game cartridges.

Which means that there are over 500 games you can expand into in that growing library.

So basically, the new Super Pocket is the budget vertical edition of the Evercade.

In terms of appearance, the new Super Pocket certainly has a bit of a children’s toy vibe.

But when you check out the finer details of the design, it has some pretty great things happening.

I am particularly impressed with the design of the rear of this new handheld, and I’m very curious how those triggers will feel. Because I think they look quite nice!

We basically have a vertical Evercade now, so this is something I am pretty interested in checking out.

Update July 12, 2023: Shortly after the official announcement, HMT also shared two transparent models on their Twitter account.

These models will retail for £119.99 / €139.99 and are limited to 2000 units. The wording of the post is a bit confusing, so unknown if that is each or as a set of two.

"Crystal colours of the Super Pockets in one collectible package, and limited to 2000 units!"

Purchasing Information

The Super Pocket handheld game devices will retail for £49/$59/€59 each.

And the planned release date is to be in October of 2023 with pre-orders starting on July 14th.
