A unique handheld in the space that is getting a new lick of paint this year is Hyperkin's SupaBoy, a retro handheld that can take your original Super Nintendo and Super Famicom cartridges in order to play them authentically on the go, alongside the ability to sync up two controllers to the front should you want to use your original, crusty controllers. I know you do! It even has an AV out port if you want to connect it to a CRT TV.

The original SupaBoy launched way back in 2011, with a refined SupaBoy S version landing in 2016 that features a large 4.3" display and some much-needed quality-of-life upgrades. So it's crazy to see, almost 10 years on, that Hyperkin has made the decision to update the colours, and that's all that's being changed on here; it's simply a new look, keeping the original hardware like before, but a much cooler look if you ask me.

The SupaBoy S now comes in Crimson and Prime colours, featuring some transparency and subtle nods to the Famicom and Super Nintendo colourways. Keeping the iconic design, specs, display, ports and battery capacity. It has region-free compatibility too, allowing you to play your NTSC and PAL cartridges alongside the ability to use flashcarts such as Everdrive, and Game Genie and the Super GAME BOY adapter should you have them. An overall look at its features includes:

  • Built-In Screen: Play your original SNES and Super Famicom cartridges on the go, no TV required.
  • Multi-Format Support: Compatible with both NTSC and PAL Super Nintendo and Super Famicom cartridges.
  • TV Connectivity: AV output lets you connect to a larger display at home whenever you want.
  • Two Controller Ports: Front-loading ports support original Super Nintendo controllers for multiplayer sessions.
  • Flexible Display Options: Hold the brightness button for 3 seconds to toggle between 4:3 and 16:9 aspect ratios.
  • Original Cartridge Compatible: Play your authentic SNES and Super Famicom cartridges as you remember them.

The new colourways are available to pre-order today from Hyperkin's official website, retailing for $129.99, and shipping is "expected to begin" on 28th October 2026.
