What would Mario Kart be like if you swapped out Yoshi, Bowser, Luigi, and the gang for characters from Halo and a couple of other surprises thrown in for good measure? How about replacing Mario throwing a green shell for Master Chief driving a warthog, a bunch of Flood Onions, or two massive Hunters? Well, for those of you who are thinking ‘sign me up’ right now, Halo Kart exists, and it’s absolutely wild.
Halo Kart takes everything you love about Mario Kart and supercharges it. Want to get out of your vehicle and shoot other players before getting back in? Fancy upgrading your weapon by going through an Item Block? How about flying through the air when being hit by a blue shell?
Seeing the Master Chief, Steve the Marine, and Dave the Flood racing around classic tracks from Mario Kart 64 in Double Dash style action is frankly insane, but I love it. Seeing the Master Chief, Steve the Marine, and Dave the Flood racing around classic tracks from Mario Kart 64 in Double Dash style action is frankly insane, but I love it. And for some reason, Dante from Devil May Cry and Dragon Ball Z’s Goku are teamed up here too – I’m not sure how they’ve ended up here, but it’s nice to see them throwing their weight around Koopa Troopa Beach.
Ok, I do know how they ended up here – this is the creation of InfernoPlus, who is the modder who put all of these characters on Mario’s turf. It’s all part of a mod called Cursed Halo Again, and if we’re being proper, the mod’s proper title is Cursed Halo Kart. The mod just originally saw teams racing on Halo maps, but things got exciting (or sacrilegious depending on your views) when the mod was updated with N64 courses for that ultimate nostalgia explosion.
It’s not exactly the same family-friendly game that you grew up with, but there is something satisfying about looking down a sniper sight at a rival while the cows on Moo Moo Farm trundle past in the background. It’s like the Mario Doom crossover I covered a while back and provides a little something for older gamers who grew up with these titles but have moved on to grittier titles.
Check out the gameplay and meet the characters in the YouTube video rundown by Mint Blitz up above, and head to InfernoPlus’ Patreon to support more crazy mods in the future! Oh, and if you’re on the look out for more Halo content, then check out Combat Devolved, the Game Boy Color demake you can play in your browser!
