We've had a string of retro appearances in Fortnite of late. I've been playing as Blanka for a while now, with characters like Ben 10, He-Man, and other classic series joining the battle. Heck, we even had The Simpsons and South Park getting their own characters and maps for a while. But now, one of the biggest legends in gaming history is bringing his own spin on the Battle Royale masterpiece.

The trailer for Chapter 7, Season 4 shows Sonic rolling around a classic, grassy stage with loops and drops, followed by Peely legging it with a burst of speed like the blue-blur himself. It seems like the perfect way to celebrate Sonic's 35th Anniversary, and I can only hope that we'll get the likes of Sonic and Dr. Robotnik as playable characters.

The new Sonic-inspired zone, which will hopefully bring different gameplay modes in the same vein as the Star Wars events, is dropping on August 20th, 2026. This new chapter is titled 'Override', and according to the official trailer, is going to both break the rules and change the game. I hope that means that we're going to see a different way to attack opponents, or maybe a whole new set of rules coming in entirely. Will rings be used as life? Will Big the Cat replace the Loot Llamas? That last one is a bit insane, but I'm excited to see what comes next.

I wonder if the fact that Sonic is lending his style to Fortnite will make nintendo want to get Mario involved in it in some way? I know we had the Coconut Gun in Donkey Kong 64, but I just can't see Nintendo giving Mario a machine gun and letting him loose on characters from all over the globe. The only time I've ever seen that happen is in the Mario/Doom ROM hack, and that isn't something I think Nintendo would want to know exists either.

There's not long to wait until August 20th now, and I'll definitely be taking a look at it when it does! Check out how well/badly I'm doing on our socials in 9 days time!
