DK Bros Is A Two Player Co-Op ROM Hack Of The Iconic Arcade Game

DK BROS GAMEPLAY & LOGO

How can you improve on an icon? Some people would say that the original Donkey Kong game doesn’t need any tinkering with, that it’s perfect as it is. Well, 10Yard would say differently, and I would agree, because when it comes to the arcade classic, two heads are ultimately better than one. Enter DK Bros!

Games are always better with a friend by your side, and now you can have Mario & Luigi (or technically Jumpman and his brother… who I guess we call Jumpman 2 or Greenman) smashing barrels and taking on the different stages while you attempt to reach DK together. It’s the stuff that dreams are made of.

While you’re playing alongside a friend, the mechanics of the original title are still the same for each player. You’ll get your own hammers that can be used independently and rack up your own points too, so if Player 1 keeps completing the stage, they’ll keep getting the bonus points from each level. It’s worth noting that if one of you dies, you both die, so I guess it’s up to you how much of a competition the game becomes or if you’re going to work together in perfect Kong-bashing harmony. I can see a ‘Castle Crashers’ situation happening here and players going a little feral!

How does this hack work, I hear you crying. Well, it’s based around MAME which you’ll know all about if you’ve been a long-time Retro Dodo reader. 10Yard’s GitHub page gives details about the program wrapper, ROM hack, and LUA plugin needed for MAME and instructions on how to marry them up with your existing Donkey Kong ROM file. Check out the gameplay teaser video below and witness the Bros in action!
