Could This New Handheld Be The Rumoured ANBERNIC RG557?

ANBERNIC haven't been shy about shipping out more handhelds than we've had hot dinners - throughout all of 2024, it felt like as soon as we had finished a review of their last handheld they would announce a new one. It was as though they were waiting for us to press 'publish' before dropping the next surprise!

Still, 2025 has been pretty quiet in terms of announcements from ANBERNIC HQ. The last review we did was of the RG406H back in December 2024 and usually, there would have been a handful of potential devices heading our way after Christmas. Still, A handheld shared via Silicon Den looks very much like it could finally be the RG557, the anticipated sequel to the RG556 that we reviewed last February.

This elusive handheld was showcased at CES in January but not by Anbernic themselves, though now it seems to have been fused with the whispers of the RG557 and looks as though a release could be imminent. What little specs I've found show that it will have a 5.5" display which is marginally bigger than the previous iteration and boast a Qualcomm Snapdragon Custom G2 chipset, providing an upgrade from the Unisoc T820 ANNBERNIC used in the RG556. Whether the screen will be touch-screen like the last device remains unknown, but according to details shared by Notebook Check, it will run at 1080p with a refresh rate of 60 Hz.

The only other specs I have to offer you are that it will reportedly measure 25.5cm wide x 11.4 cm tall x 3.2cm deep and come with 8GB of RAM. My first impressions are that it looks like it will be comfortable to hold and I really like the matte plastic finish. Let's hope it can improve on the RG556 and comes with a price that isn't astronomical - I'd like for it to be priced competitively, but as the RG556 was $180, I can't see it selling for anything under $200.

That's all for now, but don't worry; I'll be updating this article with more information as and when I get it!
