One of the perks of being a retro gaming journalist is that sometimes I stumble across some very absurd things, and today that has happened yet again, all thanks to a popular Australian electronic music group by the name of The Avalanches.
Firstly, to get you up to speed, The Avalanches specialise in electronic music that has been sampled from vinyls, video games, VHS, tapes, CDs and even cartridges, mixing it together to create incredibly unique, somewhat nostalgic pieces of audio that have turned them into one of the most popular electronic music groups in Australia.
They're a little wacky, let's put it that way, and their recent merchandise launch confirms that, thanks to the reveal of a new console named SuperFun, which could potentially be using Turbografx-16 cartridges. It's also designed in a way that is incredibly childish, fun, colorful and again, nostalgic, featuring two controllers that look like a clown's face.

This is all to help promote their new album "Together", and it could be that this SuperFun never actually makes it into reality and was just a marketing stunt to get nerds like me talking about it. But it does say that it can be bought for roughly $699AUD, which is around £375 or $499USD.
The console states that it has "sold out", but nobody has seen it in stock as of yet, making many believe that its soon to officially launch for the mentioned price. It will likely come with The Avalanches album included on a cartridge, seeing as a listing of two "Game Pak Cartridges" is on their website featuring their albums for $9.99. The landing page mentions the following specifications, too:
- TurboGraphic 16
- 2x 32-bit RISC Processors
- 32,768 Colors
- 50,000 Polygons per second
- Interchangeable Game Pak Cartridges
- Digital Stereo Sound

The console has made its way into other album promotional material, showcasing multiple cartridges, controllers and a unique design that many 90's kids will undoubtedly enjoy. There's no more information regarding release dates, what emulator it uses, if it works with official controllers etc, so do take all of this with a pinch of salt.
It would be very unprofessional to tease a product for sale, get the community excited to then rip it from our hands just for the promotion of an album, but we've seen it happen before. My fingers are crossed that this does become a real thing, and it's very similar to what Green Day did last year with the Dookie re-release on GAME BOY cartridges and other retro tech.
