The never ending handheld spitting machine that is ANBERNIC are undoubtedly working on several other upcoming handhelds (one being a leaked handheld with two screens), but one upcoming device that may have just been leaked due to revealed patents could be the next “RG406P” according to handheld leaker NNITRX.
NNITRX has a history leaking handheld patents, many being retro handhelds, but some being more popular portable gaming PC’s. It’s likely NNITRX has a source in Shenzen that shares this information, with some of his leaked being real and announced shortly after.
But, please take this image with a pinch of salt, ANBERNIC work on a lot of initial designs, many that probably don’t come to fruition but that said, this one does look like a form-factor that ANBERNIC would pursue.
ANBERNIC have recently fell into the trap of quantity over quality, and are becoming one of the manufacturers that many enthusiasts are losing respect for. Their devices are constantly cutting corners and its very evident that they are happy doing so, to create a sense of FOMO for you to buy more of their consoles, instead of focusing on a single superb handheld that owns a certain market, exactly what the Retroid Pocket Mini has done as of recent.
This RG406P could potentially compete with the Retroid Pocket 2S, a superb handheld with a 4:3 display that costs just $89 and works with emulation up to and including Dreamcast flawlessly. Perhaps ANBERNIC wants to compete with a large display, something many have been asking for in a form factor like this, but then one could argue that the RG40XXH does just that, and likely everything this upcoming device can do? Hence why I am curios to see if this patent will even become a reality, as it could have been an older patent perhaps.
Let’s take a look at what the name could mean, as typically ANBERNIC use numbers and letters to indicate some kind of specification. The 40 indicates the potential chip used or the screen size, and the P indicated that is made of plastic. There’s no actual leak stating that this name is even confirmed, it’s just an inkling from NNITRX, so I suspect this will be different.
The only unique differences i can see between this and the RG40XXH is the DPAD layout, being under the analogue sticks, which looks like it will feature their new signature LED Hall-joysticks. The design is much more rectangular, closer to the designs of their older RG351P.
This is all the information I have so far, a very rough patent for a handheld that may or may not come to fruition. I think from initial designs that it would be silly to launch something like this with what ANBERNIC already have on the market, but we all know from recent years that ANBERNIC are becoming a little desperate, and have made many poor decisions in the past, so who knows, they could throw it into the atmosphere and see what sticks.
