A Photographer Created A Modified Zoom For The Game Boy Camera

One of the things that I love about the Game Boy Camera is that it refuses to be put into a box in the attic and give in to the fact that it's behind the times. So far over the past 12 months, I've received a book through the door about a little GB Camera called Poca heading out on adventures through Scotland, I've seen a Game Boy Camera being used for a Game Chat camera on the Nintendo Switch, and I've seen gamers coming up with lots of other weird and wonderful ways to keep this peripheral alive like turning it into a webcam.

If you're also a Game Boy Camera enthusiast, then you'll love the fact that back in 2018, Dutch photographer Bastiaan Ekeler created a Canon EF Mount for his Game Boy Camera. He's taken his concoction out and about to get some incredibly detailed zoomed photos using the 128 x 112 resolution camera.

Using a 3D printer, Bastiaan made a mount for his Canon zoom, with the GB Camera sensor screwing into the back of the 3D printer attachment. It looks mad resting on a tin of coffee in the picture above, but Bastiaan has managed to capture some amazing shots on this self-named 'abomination', including 'shooting the moon handheld with a ~3000mm equivalent lens on an unlit gameboy screen that updates at about 1fps in low light'.

The fact that Bastiaan's mount gives the GB Camera a max focal distance of over 3,000mm is amazing. It's just another example of retro gaming lovers repurposing and keeping old technology alive, just like Hunter Irving keeping the ASCII GameCube controller alive and kicking in 2025.

If you've got any photographs you're proud of that you've taken with the Game Boy Camera, zoomed in with a frankenzoom like Bastiaan's or not, then I'd love to hear about them in the comments below!
