Yes, you read that right – a new game is coming to the NES in 2025 as well as launching on all current-gen consoles. It’s called The Angry Video Game Nerd 8-Bit, and it features the Angry Video Game Nerd himself, aka YouTube sensation James Rolfe, as the main character, bashing back sub-standard NES games in a bid to stop a ‘corrupted monstrosity hell-bent on domination’.
I’ve watched so many of AVGN’s videos over the years to be incredibly excited about this release, and the fact that it’s also releasing on the NES on an actual cartridge is both amazing and true to Rolfe’s brand. Don’t worry if you don’t own a NES as the game will release on Switch, Xbox, PS5, and Steam too, but playing this on a NES on an old CRT is definitely the route I’ll be going down!
The game is definitely influenced by the Mega Man series and, in true AVGN style, the trailer tells us that this could be just as frustrating, ball-busting, and rage-inducing as the games we’ve watched Rolfe review over the years, especially when you chose the ‘hard as balls’ setting. Yep, this is definitely an Angry Video Game Nerd title alright!
Grim Reapers giving you the middle finger, bosses trying to stomp you flat, memories from gaming past coming back to haunt our titular character as he fights enemies with a NES Zapper and a Power Glove – this is true 8-bit brilliance with a chiptune soundtrack that takes you straight back to the 80s. The game itself is being developed alongside Pensylvania-based Mega Cat Studios and will be available exclusively through Limited Run Games. You can, however, get an early look at the game at MAGFest in Maryland from today until January 26th at the Indie Video Showcase exhibit.
There is no definitive release date yet other than Q2 2025, so keep your eyes peeled on our socials and the Limited Run Games website for more information as to when the game drops!
