I was about to start this article with the words ‘I’ve gone back in time’, but as I write about retro media for a living, I guess that’s a given. I’ve got God of War Ragnarok to finish and more things to do on Tears of the Kingdom than I can count, but all I want to do is sit and play Game Boy Color games. I’ve been putting so many hours into Pokémon Gold at the minute and am waiting patiently for Dragonhym to arrive from ModRetro, so there’s no surprise that I’m constantly scouting the internet for new Game Boy Color titles to add to my collection.
I’m sure many of you will already know about Hermano, one of the homebrew games that I included in my roundup when Delta first launched on iPhone and a title that has since found its home on the ModRetro Chromatic. Well, the studio behind the skeletal wonder, Pat Morita, is bringing out a new GBC title called Metal Miracle that’s in full colour and feels a little bit like a spiritual successor to Gunstar Heroes.
Play as a Ninja Guitarist or a Mutant Punk as you embark on a run ‘n gun adventure on your Game Boy Color. The Metal Resistance are fighting to recover the Primordial Melody in order to free humanity, bringing music back to a world filled with horrible noise. Luckily the actual game music features some incredible chiptune tracks from Carlos Pérez that Jake Silverman would be proud of.
The game is currently in development, but you can download a 4-level demo from Pat Morita’s itch.io page to check out how the game will run once finished. The Kickstarter campaign isn’t currently live either, but with over 200 followers primed and ready for launch already, I’m confident this game will meet its target early on.
