I hope you’re impressed with that title, because I think it could be some of my best work. RainbowSprinklez has been working incredibly hard in the run-up to the 30th Anniversary of Donkey Kong Country. As a DKC ROM hacker, they know the game inside out, which means they have the perfect chance to make things super difficult for us in crazy new challenges.
My last ROM hack news post was about 3 new challenge modes that RainbowSprinklez has made for Doonkey Kong Country, pushing the difficulty level to insane new heights with Challenge Edition, Expert Edition, and Hero Edition, a new difficulty level for every 10 years of the game’s existence. Now, there’s a Mirror Mode ROM hack called ‘Donkey Kong Country Mirrored’ where everything is flipped from back to front. If you thought you knew how to play the game from memory, then think again!
It’s as simple to grasp (initially) as it sounds. All the levels, all the enemies, everything has been flipped sideways. DK and Diddy still move from left to right in the traditional side-scroller fashion, but you’ll start off at the exit and have to make your way to the start point of each level. Confusing, huh?
This ROM hack began its life back in 2017 and was a project started by modded vervalkon, but it never came to completion. RainbowSprinklez has managed to get it ready for this important week in Donkey Kong history, however, and alongside the new difficult ROM hacks they’ve recently released, there’s plenty of DKC content to keep you occupied until DK’s next big milestone (which is in a few weeks when his Super Nintendo World expansion opens up!).
So what do you think; are you up to the DKC Mirrored challenge? If you like playing Mirror Mode on Mario Kart, then this should be simple. Still, I’ve got a feeling it’ll leave you scratching your head just like DK trying to understand what Kranky is talking about at any given moment!
