There are article titles that evoke incredible excitement with the Dodo team, and then there are ones like this that go one step further and require us to sit down and take a couple of breaths to avoid completely losing our minds. One of the main reasons I bought an old CRT TV was to use light guns with games like House of the Dead and Time Crisis and play all my favourite original PlayStation titles on the medium they were intended for. Still, not everyone has enough room for another TV in their living room or office, which is why this new piece of kit shared by Game Watch is music to the ears of nostalgic Sony fans everywhere.
Enter the AI Gun Con system, a simple plug-and-play system that works with all LCD monitors and allows you to use a light gun without any tinkering or messing around. It’s set to be unveiled by Achievement Electric at the Tokyo Game Show later this week under the name G’AIM’E, which is a brilliant play on words for the fact that aiming is what Time Crisis is all about. The system comes pre-loaded with the original Time Crisis game and takes all the stress out of trying to find a modern-day lightgun, PS1, and a copy of the game.
It’s priced really well too; the basic unit will cost $89.99 and ships with a gun and the game unit. If you want to go ‘full arcade mode’, then there’s a unit that costs $119.99 that also comes with a pedal controller.
I’m not a fan of AI at all due to what it’s doing to the creative industry, but I honestly can’t knock it in this system. Having a system that works for under $100 which includes everything in one package offers a nice alternative for those who don’t want to buy modern alternatives like the Sinden Lightgun. Admittedly, I would always prefer to use original hardware down to the fact that you can play other games too instead of just one title pre-installed into a system, but it wouldn’t surprise me if the community gets hold of this thing and finds a way of modding it to play ROMs from multiple systems.
