GENERATIONS Is A New Premium Video Game Magazine Celebrating Every Console Generation

Generations Magazine front, back, and inside cover

Can you remember when you used to rush to the newsagents to grab hold of the latest gaming magazine? Perhaps you were like me and had a subscription and either stood at the counter with bated breath hoping that it had arrived or perched on the step waiting for the postman to push it through your letterbox, hoping you would get to it before the dog did.

The days of me opening up Nintendo Official Magazine are sadly long gone, and while I love sharing news with all of you via Retro Dodo every single day, I often yearn to hold physical media in my hands, to have that new smell of a freshly-printed magazine and something that I can flick through while sitting back and drinking a coffee. Well, a Kickstarter campaign has launched which promises just that: a premium publication covering every console generation from the birth of console gaming to the modern day, and it’s called GENERATIONS.

Welcome to GENERATIONS, the first in a line of quarterly-published magazines brought to you by GameBound. The campaign is being led by our great friend Andrew Dickinson and GameBound co-founder Paul Murphy, both of whom have worked on publications such as GameBook, [lock-on], Switch Player, and our very own A Handheld History. Their mission is simple – to make sure that Game Magazines continue to thrive for newer generations and to stop them from falling into the ether in a time when keeping the past alive is so important in our space.

GENERATIONS is set to be a 132-page booklet that comes out every 3 months in English, Spanish, and German. The fact that it’s coming out in multiple languages really excites me too; it was only last week that I was chatting with three Austrians at a BBQ about our favourite N64 moments. Four people who grew up in completely different parts of the world talking about the same exact experiences from their childhoods was a fantastic moment. GameBound is poised to create that same feeling, adding another connection to bring the community together.

If you know anything about Paul and Andrew’s previous works, then you’ll already know what to expect from GameBound. Beautifully illustrated pages, engaging copy, fantastic photography, artwork created just for the magazine, and facts about every console generation that will blow your mind. Every magazine will be packed full of interviews, analysis of consoles from people in the industry, and much more.

What To Expect From Issue 1

Never has the phrase ‘starting with a bang’ been more apt. Issue 1 of the new magazine will feature an in-depth look at the Microvision with Mike Diver, a dive into Pong with Lewis Packwood, an interview with Clock Tower and Steel Battalion creator Hifumi Kono, and so much more, including articles from regular columnists in both the UK and USA and a special intermission from Game Informer Associate Editor Wesley LeBlanc.

That’s an action-packed first issue for sure, and Kickstarter backers can choose from different tiers that provide digital-only access, softcover magazines, hardback editions, enamel pins, and many more goodies. The GENERATIONS magazine is 1/3 of its way to being fully backed with 53 days to go at the time of writing, so if you want to see gaming magazines thrive once more, head over to the Kickstarter Campaign and help GameBound’s dream come to life!

If you enjoy what you read and want to support an independent publication, you can become a premium member to receive extra benefits and a physical welcome kit! We may also earn a commission from affiliate links on this page too. Thank you.
