The Power Rangers Are Back With A New Arcade-Style Action Game Perfect For Retro Fans

Action shot from new power rangers game Rita's Rewind

Of all the shows that I watched in my youth, none of them had as big an impact as the Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers. Angel Grove, Zordon, the Zords, Alpha 5 going ‘Ai Ai Ai’ all of the time; I was obsessed with the series as a kid, and now that I’m older, the only thing that has changed is the fact that I can go out and buy all of the toys and figurines and convince myself that I’m making great investments as an adult.

My obsession with the Power Rangers has continued into the games too; if you can’t physically morph into a ranger yourself, then playing as one of them is the next best thing, right? Well, if you agree, then the recent announcement from Digital Eclipse about their new game ‘Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers: Rita’s Rewind’ will make you feel like a 90s kid all over again. It’s a brand new adventure dropping later this year, and as the description of the YouTube announcement video tells us, it features important lore mixed with scenarios and gameplay that long-time fans will find familiar but also new at the same time.

Digital Eclipse might well sound familiar to you; they’ve been responsible for some of the recent nostalgic collections and games dropping on the Nintendo Switch such as the Disney Classic Games Collection and the interactive documentary ‘Llamasoft: The Jeff Minter Story’, as well as The Cowabunga Collection featuring our favourite heroes in a half shell, the Mega Man Legacy Collection, and much more.

It’s Morphin’ Time!

This all sounds pretty promising to me so far, and the story behind the game has already piqued my interest! The Rangers are set to face off against Rita Repunzel, but with a twist. You’ll be going up against Robo-Rita; she’s heading back in time (hence the ‘rewind’ part of the title) to work together with her younger self to change the course of history and stop the creation of the Power Rangers. She never knows when to give up!

Quoting directly from Digital Eclipse’s YouTube description, ‘Will the two Ritas and their army of monstrous enemies from across the MMPR timeline finally succeed in destroying the Power Rangers? Or will these teenagers with attitude learn to work together and counter this catastrophic chronological collaboration? Experience the origins of the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers again – for the first time! The past will never be the same…’ The game features plenty of multiplayer brawling but also sees players driving and blasting their way through levels, a real ‘genre spanner’ as the Mighty Boosh once said.

There is no official word as to when the game will be released yet other than late 2024, but according to the listing on the Digital Eclipse website, the company is planning to release it on PS4, Xbox One, PS5, Xbox Series X, Switch, and Steam. As always, we’ll have more information for you as and when it arrives!
