The Pokemon anime came out more than two decades ago; but still, to this day, you can’t help but sing along to the Pokemon theme song if you hear it somewhere. What can I say, the song was a Bop when it came out, and it still is one more than twenty years later.

The Pokemon anime is the source of nostalgia for many of us, and listening to the theme song just brings back all the memories of a simpler past!

The anime is a pivotal point in the franchise’s history. It was supposed to end at some point, but 20 years later, we’re still getting new episodes. There’s no way they will stop making them because we’ll never get enough of Pokemon!

The Pokemon Theme song, in particular, is probably one of the best opening songs in the history of anime, and the English version was even better. The lyrics to this iconic song are given below, so sing along!

Pokemon Theme Song Lyrics

I wanna be the very best

Like no one ever was

To catch them is my real test

To train them is my cause

I will travel across the land.

Searching far and wide

Teach Pokémon to understand[1]

The power that’s inside

Pokémon (Gotta catch ’em all), it’s you and me

I know it’s my destiny

(Pokémon!)

Oh, you’re my best friend

In a world, we must defend

Pokémon (Gotta catch ’em all), a heart so true

Our courage will pull us through

You teach me, and I’ll teach you

Po-ké-mon!

(Gotta catch ’em all!)

Yeah

Every challenge along the way

With courage, I will face

I will battle every day

To claim my rightful place

Come with me, the time is right

There’s no better team,

Arm in arm, we’ll win the fight

It’s always been our dream

Pokémon (Gotta catch ’em all), it’s you and me

I know it’s my destiny

(Pokémon!)

Oh, you’re my best friend

In a world, we must defend

Pokémon (Gotta catch ’em all), a heart so true

Our courage will pull us through

You teach me, and I’ll teach you

Po-ké-mon!

(Gotta catch ’em all!)

Gotta catch ’em all!

Gotta catch ’em all!

Gotta catch ’em all!

Yeah!

Pokémon (Gotta catch ’em all), it’s you and me

I know it’s my destiny

(Pokémon!)

Oh, you’re my best friend

In a world, we must defend

Pokémon (Gotta catch ’em all), a heart so true

Our courage will pull us through

You teach me, and I’ll teach you

Po-ké-mon!

(Gotta catch ’em all!)

Gotta catch ’em all!

Pokémon!

History

pokemon original anime

As you can see, the song is an absolute banger, and the lyrics are like a masterpiece compared to many mumble rap songs.

The song is the official theme song of the Pokemon anime. It continues to be in 82 episodes, which is spread across multiple seasons.

Unlike Japanese shows where the theme songs tend to change frequently, the English Dub managed to keep only one song for most of the run.

The song has been drilled into the minds of most of the kids because of being in so many episodes, and hence it is so widely known even after so many years of its initial release. The English version was sung by the talented Jason Paige, who made a video of this song!

The song is written in a common meter which is very common in pop music. Hence the song was already a hit before ven got released as it was very similar to the popular songs back then and now.

The song is very similar to Bon Jovi’s Runaway, infact if you hear them one after the other, you’ll see how much the songs are similar to each other!

The song has also become synonymous with many memes as the Poke fans who’ve grown up, like to experience nostalgia and create memes about the song. And thanks to this simple structure the song is written in, it becomes straightforward for creators to develop their own versions of the song.

Many metal versions of the song also were created after Youtube started becoming popular!

Fun Facts

As the song was trendy and the anime was great, the anime has been dubbed into many different languages, so it was bound to create some weird stories; like this one in particular. The Danish version of this song has been sung by the same voice actor who played Professor Oak in the Danish version of the anime.

The song’s popularity isn’t unknown, but the music was so popular that the BBC radio played it in their Christmas Special in 2011. And why won’t they, Jason Paige sung the song so beautifully.  If you want to see a live session including Jason Paige singing this song, here is the link.
