Resident Evil is one of the most recognised game series of all time. As humans, we seem to have an obsession with slaying zombies - I don't know whether it's the scariest thing we can think of or if it's just a fear that one day we'll come back and try to chomp on our family members, but we can't stop playing games where we have to take down undead cretins. You've played the games, you've seen the movies directed by Paul W. S. Anderson starring Mila Jovovich, and you've probably pretended to take down Las Plagas when out for a walk with the dog.

Now, there's only one thing to find out - which is the best Resident Evil game of all time? Which game has the best storyline, the best action, the best pant-wettingly scary cutscenes? Which game is the most loved by the entire world, and which one has a special place in our hearts? I know that's more than 'one thing', but they all have the same answer!
We put it to you, our readers and spokespeople for the Retro Gaming community, to pick the best Resident Evil game of all time. We chose 16 of the best titles from the series and put them head to head, and 30,000 of you showed up to cast your votes.

There were some close calls and some absolute whitewashes during the rounds, though some definite favourites started popping up in the comments. Many people thought that Resident Evil 4 would make it all the way to the end, which it did, squaring up against Resident Evil 2 for a final zombie-culling showdown.

In the end, Resident Evil 2 took the top spot and became the King of the Undead. It's one of the most incredible games I've ever played to this day, and while so many of the other Resident Evil games are great, Resident Evil 2 just seemed to get the formula so right. Not only is it a zombie game done right, but it has so many great moments in it that, whether playing the original or the remake, never fail to blow me away. And yes, even though zombies terrify me, I do love playing this game. It's hard not to love it, and it's such an influential game.
I'm not going to lie - I voted for Resi 4, because that game on the GameCube was insanely good, but I'm still happy Resi 2 won. Capcom, if you're reading this, you've just won the Retro Dodo Achievement of Excellence, an accolade that should help you be very prosperous for years to come. I bet they can rest easy now, huh?
Thanks for voting everyone, and we'll see you back on our Facebook for the next tournament starting tonight, where we'll all pick the best Final Fantasy game of all time!
