If I could tell my younger self that one day I would be writing about LEGO ideas projects based on my favourite consoles, I would have probably been freaked out that a version of me had arrived from the future and begun worrying about how little hair I would have as an adult. Once I had calmed down, however, I would have been incredibly excited, especially about this fan-made LEGO PS2 that could well become a reality now that it’s surpassed the number of votes to be put in front of the LEGO experts.
This blocky PS2 is the brainchild of Finnish Designer RippleDrive (thanks Brick Fanatics) and looks like the ultimate tribute to the current best-selling console of all time. In true LEGO form, this set has tonnes of interactive features for fans to play with including a disc tray that opens and a lens that can be moved just like the original when it reads your games. The set comes with memory cards that can be inserted and even a lid that lifts up so you can see the inner workings of the console too. Just take a look at the wires and chips in the image below – it’s all very clever!
The controllers can be plugged in and out of the console and it features all of the ports used on the original console. And how’s this for something special for the hardcore fans – inside the controller you’ll find the original seven orbs used in the PS2 menu.
RippleDrive has put so much thought into this project that I sincerely hope it becomes a reality, but now it has to go up against 44 other ideas built by fans who are equally hoping they become the set that hits the supermarket shelves. And with a LEGO Godzilla, Bob Ross’ studio, and the library from Unseen University in Terry Pratchett’s Discworld series, there’s some serious competition to go up against. Let’s just hope the LEGO experts are gamers – I want this thing on my desk asap!
