You know we love our ROM hacks here at Retro Dodo, and I’ve discovered a genius collaboration this morning that combines one of the spookiest Nintendo games with an unlikely hero who’s more used to throwing Pikmin and getting Hocotate Freight into debt than vacuuming up ghosts. Yes, Luigi is out and Captain Olimar’s co-worker Louie is in, proving that after his recent role as more of an antagonist in Pikmin 4, he’s ready to take a leap into the big leagues and star in his own game.
The name might have changed, but the font and the premise are the same. Louie has won a free mansion and it’s jam-packed full of food. If there’s one thing we know about Louie, the guy can eat, and there better be a tonne of bugs in there for him to chomp on otherwise he’s going to be super mad.
Your mission is to save Olimar from an evil ghost in a game where every single element has been swapped for something in the Pikmin universe. Instead of sucking up ghosts, you’ll have to capture Bulborbs and zombie-looking Pikmin ghouls, and you’ll pick up items belonging to Olimar along the way. The gameplay looks brilliant, and while the beginning of the trailer will admittedly give me nightmares for the foreseeable future, it looks like this ambitious idea has worked out perfectly.
According to the trailer posted by creator VivvyBoy on YouTube, Louie’s Mansion is playable on console hardware as well as emulators too. I’m definitely going to give this a go on Halloween and get into the spooky spirit after playing Shadow Man and Turok 2!
